Information Technology Bachelor’s degree

The IT program provides students a solid understanding of the foundational areas of information technology such as programming, web design and scripting languages, database systems, networking and systems administration thus preparing them for entry level positions in these areas as well as providing them with the knowledge required to pursue a Bachelor’s degree in specific areas of IT such as software engineering, networking or cybersecurity.

What is Information Technology?

The IT program prepares students to learn the basic elements of problem solving and critical reasoning skills via programming logic and object-oriented programming techniques, structured programming techniques and web scripting abilities using current, industry-standard programming and scripting languages. Students will also learn the basics of database design and administration as well as the fundamentals of networking and systems administration. A sophomore capstone project culminates students’ learning experience where they develop a real-life IT solution using the knowledge and skills gained in the course of their study in the program. The program is designed to award the Associate of Applied Business degree to students, with an option to transfer to the four year IT program in the School of Information Technology at the University of Cincinnati.

Success Factors

To succeed in IT, you must think logically and pay close attention to detail. The job calls for patience, persistence and the ability to work on exacting analytical work, especially under pressure. Ingenuity and creativity are particularly important. The ability to work with abstract concepts and to do technical analysis is especially important. Because you are expected to work in teams and interact directly with computer users, you must be able to communicate well with non-technical personnel.
